The Walk of Heroes - Veterans War Memorial Needs Your Help
On December 15, 2017, the Walk of Heroes Memorial (the Memorial) was vandalized and the three individuals who did this took two of the statues, the globe and multiple bronze plaques within the Memorial. All were caught in January and February 2018 and jailed. The Rockdale County Sheriff’s Department accomplished an amazing mission.
The three individuals had cut up the two statues and the globe in order to sell them. Just before they were captured, they threw all the pieces in a lake and all of the pieces were recovered. On February 15, 2019, one individual (out of Newnan, GA) plead guilty and received a sentence of 15 years, with 10 to serve, probation, a fine of $5,000 and restitution of $25,000. On April 10, 2019, another individual (out of Taylorsville, GA) plead guilty and received 25 years, with 20 to serve, probation and restitution of $25,000. The third individual (out of Weatherly, TX) plead guilty on April 22, 2019, and received the same sentence. The Rockdale County District Attorney and the judge provided justice to these three individuals. The damage these three individuals caused will cost $200,000 to replace everything back to where it was.
To date, the fundraising efforts have raised $62,031, and in addition to the insurance proceeds, there is a need to raise another $70,000. This will allow the complete restoration of the 1,200-foot-long Memorial. The Cherokee Run Golf Club in Conyers, GA, held a golf tournament in March of 2018 and 2019, and raised $23,000. A total of 247 donations have been received from within Georgia, 11 other states, and Canada. But the fundraising efforts must continue.
On behalf of this effort to raise the needed funds, you can go to www.walkofheroes.org to make a donation online. While there, please take the time to watch the virtual reality and drone videos. You can also mail a check to Walk of Heroes, P.O. Box 289, Conyers, GA 30012. Every penny counts toward accomplishing this goal.
If you have any questions, feel free to call Tommy Clack at (404) 401-7142. The entire Board are all volunteers and receive no compensation. The Memorial is an IRS 501(c)3 organization, registered with the Georgia Secretary of State, and is bonded.
