4th Annual Veterans Memorial 5K and Military Appreciation Celebration
“Honoring Our Heroes – Those Past, Present and Fallen!”
The American Legion Horace Orr Post 29 in Marietta, Georgia, will host the 4th Annual Veterans Memorial 5K and Military Appreciation Celebration on Saturday, May 26, with the race beginning at 7:30 AM on the Marietta square. The purpose of the race and celebration is to raise awareness about veterans’ issues and needs in Cobb County and the State of Georgia as well as to raise funds for the veterans’ charities supported by the American Legion Post 29. Proceeds from the race are designated to the Shepherds Men, the Georgia National Guard Foundation and the Service Office of the American Legion Post 29. This run is an official, Certified Peachtree Road Race Qualifier with chip timing. An Awards ceremony, food and beverages will be provided after the race.
American Legion Post 29 is part of the American Legion federally chartered veteran services organization which started in 1919. Walt Cusick is the current Commander of Post 29 and Tom Bell is Sr. Vice-Commander of the Sons of American Legion Post 29 and the Race Committee Chairman.
This year’s race will be followed by the Military Appreciation Celebration to honor the men and women who are serving and those who have served this great country. The celebration will begin around 11 AM and will include a program of speakers, the Boy Scouts, and a POW-MIA Ceremony, followed by a concert performed by the Georgia Symphony Orchestra.
Special guests at the race will include members of the Shepherd’s Men, who will be completing their annual run (from Chicago to Atlanta) to raise awareness and funds for veterans with PTSD and other injures related to combat. The Shepherds Men are part of the SHARE Initiative at the Shepherds Center here in Atlanta.
Military leadership from the Georgia National Guard and members from the Georgia National Guard Recruiting Team are expected to participate in the run and also be on site with static displays. The Georgia National Guard Foundation is a recognized support organization to the Guard and provides emergency relief assistance to soldiers and airmen facing financial hardships.
